WHAT IS WALKTOBER?
As autumn’s colors come into view, there are few places more beautiful to walk than Syracuse and the Central New York region. For the fifth year, Healthy Monday Syracuse, in partnership with the University Wellness Initiative of Syracuse University will host Walktober – a month-long initiative and competition that encourages students, faculty, and staff to step outside and take a walk. Walktober welcomes walkers, runners, rollers, hikers, and joggers from SU, SUNY ESF, SUNY Upstate, the VA and all our friends on the hill.
Participants track their physical activity each week and are encouraged to challenge themselves with weekly goals using online tools on the Walktober web platform and mobile app. Stay motivated by viewing your progress, supporting your team members and fellow participants and sharing your success stories. We’ll also help you stay motivated by rewarding our most active and engaged participants.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Everyone can start walking and be successful in Walktober — whether you’re just starting out or are an avid walker. Aim for 30 minutes/6000 steps of walking a day, 4 days a week to start, then gradually increase your walking to 5 or more days a week at 45-60 minutes/8000-10,000 steps by the end of the program.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Your goal is to accumulate Walktober leaves by recording walking and other physical activity each day — 30-44 minutes (6000-7999 steps) equals a red leaf; 45-59 minutes (8000-9999 steps) earns an orange leaf; 60+ minutes (10,000+ steps) gains a gold leaf. Any combination of red, orange, gold counts toward the goal of 20 leaves for the 31-day program.
IS THERE TEAM PARTICIPATION?
Yes! Being on a team makes Walktober even more fun as you enjoy friendly competition and it greatly increases your chances of success, however, you may choose to participate on your own, without a team. The team competition runs Saturday, October 1 to Monday, October 31; to have your activity count toward your team’s score, you must log all activity by Wednesday, November 1. To start a team, designate your team captain, decide on a team name and invite others to join your team. All members of the team must register to participate in Walktober. We’ll even have some giveaways for the most creative team names!
WILL THERE STILL BE MONDAY MILE WALKS?
Of course! Walktober is the best time to do a Monday Mile! We will be hosting walks on the SU Main campus every Monday in October at noon beginning in front of Schine Student Center. This is a great way to get in some extra steps, meet your fellow Walktober participants and get active. Pet Partners of CNY will be joining us each week for the Monday Mile so you can learn more about the organization and bond with some furry friends.
