Wrap-up of Walktober 2017

Walktober 2017 large team winners Aspire to Perspire pictured above. Congratulations and well done!

Healthy Monday Syracuse wrapped up another successful Walktober earlier this fall with 584 participants making healthy choices to move during our month-long physical activity challenge! Co-sponsored by University Wellness Initiative, Walktober 2017 brought together participants from Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate, SUNY ESF and the VA Medical Center. Each participant tracked their steps (or minutes of physical activity) during October individually or as a team. Special thanks to our partners University Wellness Initiative, Pathway to Wellness and Pet Partners of CNY for their support of Walktober 2017.

We launched in September with an official Walktober 2017 Kickstart on the SU quad, where participants registered, received free giveaways such as t-shirts, made DIY trail mix, played with our furry friends from Pet Partners of CNY and took photos with Otto the Orange. Approximately 212 participants registered for Walktober on the day of the kickoff.

During the five weeks of October, Healthy Monday led group walks on the Monday Mile to promote engagement. Rain or shine, we were accompanied by our four-legged friends from Pet Partners of CNY and their handlers at each walk. During the week of Halloween, Healthy Monday participated in Welloween at SUNY Upstate.

In November, Healthy Monday recognized the following participants for their achievements at the Walktober 2017 Awards Luncheon:

National Culinary Review Features Meatless Monday

Meatless Monday logo

The National Culinary Review has featured the Meatless Monday campaign in its November/December 2017 issue! The article by Jan Greenberg highlights how Meatless Monday started from a World War II era practice in rationing to a national movement embraced by the prestigious James Beard Foundation and celebrity headliners such as Oprah.

Meatless Monday has gained traction nationally since it was launched in 2003 by the movement’s founder, Sid Lerner, one of the original “Mad Men” of the advertising world. Lerner’s then newfound passion for marketing healthy eating has helped bring about a cultural shift in how society thinks about eating plant-based foods and it’s affect on our health as well as the greater social impact.
