New Monday Miles in Madison County!

Healthy Monday Syracuse began the process of creating a Monday Mile initiative in Madison County in the summer of 2016. After much hard work over this past year, the Madison County Rural Health Council in partnership with Healthy Monday Syracuse have installed 8 new walking trails across the county as part of the Monday Mile program. These marked one-mile routes are located in the towns of Canastota, Oneida, Morrisville, Stockbridge, DeRuyter and Brookfield with two loops in DeRuyter and an indoor loop at the Oneida Recreation Center. We are excited to have worked with our partners to introduce the Monday Mile in a rural communities, making it easier to get moving in Madison County!

The process began by engaging stakeholders, like the village boards, parents, teachers and other residents in the community. We had the opportunity to plan promotional events to encourage the support of the Monday Mile in these communities. The Monday Mile encourages physical activity by identifying safe and accessible spaces for recreation. It supports organizations that utilize the Monday Mile to facilitate physical activity in the places where people live, work and play and it provides sustainable access to walking routes in the community that can be used by anyone, at any time, free of charge!

These loops also incorporate the new Inclusive Monday Mile Policy created in partnership with HealtheConnections, and Arise. The Inclusive Monday Mile Policy states that when planning a new Monday Mile route the staff of the Lerner Center will work with the staff of the organization(s) that want to create a Monday Mile in their community. They will go through a checklist of considerations to improve inclusivity. For example, in a loop we would like to see the presence of sidewalks with curb cutaways or a paved flat surface. Our goal is to assess the feasibility of various route options and design the route to make sure it maximizes accessibility for people of all abilities.

The Lerner Center is committed to building upon the work that we and our partners have begun to support and encourage all of Madison County community members to get active through the Monday Mile.
